Smart brand goes electric, reveals new Smart #1 SUV

As part of its future plans, the Mercedes Benz owned Smart brand has gone all electric. The announcement comes fresh off the heels of the new joint venture between Mercedes Benz and Geely automotive; the event took place in the brands trademark urban style station in Berlin.

The Smart electric brand also showed off its first new product in concept form called the Smart #1 showcar. The new concept aims to preview the design language and direction the automotive brand is heading for in the future.

The automaker says “the combination of Mercedes Benz design and smart engineering creates a compelling proposition. A pure elegant design provides a perfect balance of aesthetics and aerodynamics underpinned by depth of engineering and premium quality”.

No such details have been revealed about the car’s design though and the pics released do little in terms of details of the car. What we do know however is that Smart #1 concept will be an upright SUV with a unique floating roof kind of effect towards the rear. However seen clearly through the camofloudged are the v-shaped daytime running lights at the front and large taillights at the back.

No such word about the interior as well, but the large glasshouse points towards a spacious interior which will be interesting to note considering the Smart #1 concept isn’t big in terms of size or length.

The team led by tilo schweers (vice president of R&D), the new Smart #1 concept has been undergoing rigid testing and homologation. The testing is happening at the original smart research and development centre in Rennigen Germany.

“This is a truly exciting time for the smart brand”, says smart UK CEO David Browne. “The upcoming reveal of the smart #1 is a key milestone in the evolution of our brand, reflecting our history of innovation, outstanding design and space efficiency. Our dedicated electric platform and high degree of connectivity make for the ideal electric car to meet the needs of UK car buyers.”
