5th generation Honda City launched

Honda Car India has launched the much awaited new generation Honda City in the Indian market and has been subsequently launched in Goa too. The new City now in its 5th generation will for the first time ever in its history co-exist along with the outgoing 4th generation model as well.

Built on a new platform, the new City claims to be the longest and the widest in the segment. It measures in at 4595mm in length, 1748mm in width, 1489mm in height and shares a wheelbase that’s 2600mm in comparison and a boot capacity of 530 litres. The car however rides on the same 185/60 R16 section tyres at front and 180/65 R16 tyres at the rear, while the spare uses 175/65 section at front and 185/65 at the rear.

The new Honda City gets an all new design that’s a departure from the earlier version, it ditches the arrow short form and evokes in a smooth sedan like stance. It gets full LED wraparound headlights at the front along with a thick chrome bar and flat bonnet. The bumper is wider in comparison and gets LED fog lights as well. The side profile gets a waistline that Honda says has taken inspiration from a Katana blade, while the 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels are the same size as before. The rear gets new 3D effect z-shaped LED tailalmps and a nicely designed bumper with horizontally placed reflectors.

The interior is a big step up from the current City, it gets black and beige interior colour scheme with chrome inserts for the new A/C vents. The dashboard is new too and now houses a part analogue, part digital instrument cluster along with a new steering wheel that gets premium finish controls and scroll roll. The touch panel for the AC from the earlier City has been replaced by a conventional dial controls in the new car citing ease of use. An 8-inch touchscreen instrument cluster takes centre stage and comes loaded with tech. The new City also comes with luxurious leather upholstery with soft touch door lining and leather seat gearknob.

In terms of features, it comes pretty loaded with full 9 array LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED fog lights, Z-shaped LED taillights, auto folding door mirrors, shark fin antenna, one touch electric sunroof, ambient lighting, auto dimming rear view mirror, auto up & down for all power windows with pinch guard, rear sunblind, walk away auto lock for all four doors, LED reading lamps, rear A/C vents and auto headlamps. The touchscreen instrument cluster takes centre stage and comes loaded with tech including Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Radio FM, weblink and Bluetooth connectivity.

There’s also first in segment Lane watch camera borrowed from the Civic and functions when the left indicator is turned on or by a toggle switch on the indicator stalk and Alexa remote capability that can be used to access functions like turn on/off the aircondioner of the car, unlock/lock the door, find my car function, remote tailgate operation, tyre deflation warning, battery malfunction status, fuel status, time fence alert, live car location and so much more.

Mechanically under the hood the 5th generation Honda City comes powered by 1.5 litre petrol and diesel engines. The brand new 1.5 litre petrol produces 121hp and 145Nm of torque and comes, while the diesel churns out 100hp and 200Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual for both engines options and a CVT automatic limited to the petrol only.

Talking about safety, the new City comes with 6 airbags with dual front, side and curtain airbags, vehicle stability assist, rear parking sensors, multi-angle rear view camera, agile handling assist, variable intelligent wiper, tyre pressure monitoring system, auto-dimming interior mirror, ABS with EBD and Intelligent anti-theft alarm.

Sadly buyers in the fray for some new colour options will be left wanting for more, as Honda is offering the same colour pack as the earlier City. The colour options include Radiant red metallic, platinum white pearl, Modern steel grey, Lunar silver steel metallic and Golden brown metallic.

Coming to the competition, the new Honda City rivals the recently updated Hyundai Verna, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Volkswagen Vento, Skoda Rapid and the Toyota Yaris and last not forgotten the 4th gen Honda City that also co-exist with its elder brother.
