Maruti Suzuki has introduced its new BS6 spec engines with the first units making its debut under the hood of the Baleno hatchback. The 1.2 litre motor will co-exist alongside the existing 1.2 litre petrol motor that has also been updated to BS6 norms.
However buyers going in for the 1.2 litre Dualjet can purchase it in only two trims – Zeta and Delta. But the regular standard Baleno is available in all trims with manual and CVT trims.
Introducing the BS VI compliant Baleno with Smart Hybrid, Mr. R S Kalsi, Senior Executive Director, Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki India, said “Baleno has been a blockbuster car from day one. We have over 5.5 lakh happy Baleno customers since its launch in 2015 and sold more than 2 lakh units in the last fiscal year. We recently upgraded Baleno with latest design and technology. At Maruti Suzuki, we strive to bring newer, better and environment friendly technologies to our products. Baleno Smart Hybrid with BS VI stands testament to the same. We are confident that the premium hatchback Baleno will present a complete package in line with aspirations of evolving customers.”

In order to achieve stringent emission regulations requirement, the automaker has upgraded both of the engine’s hardware and software along with exhaust system. Furthermore the engine control software has also been updated for being able to use more precise fuel injection control using various on-board sensors to ensure cleaner and durable emission control. Though we have not been able to get our hands on the specs for now, we do know it returns a class leading fuel economy figure of 23.87kmpl.
The new BS6 complaint petrol engine will lead to a substantial reduction of nearly 25% in Nitrogen Oxides emissions. BS6 norms will also enforce stringent limit on Non-Methane Hydrocarbons emissions. It will also ensure a substantial increase in the durability of exhaust after treatment system.
The new 1.2 litre petrol motor now comes strapped to the company’s famed progressive Smart hybrid system. The system is equipeied with –
Torque assist stores the energy in the lithium battery assists during acceleration delivering optimal acceleration and performance without compromising on fuel efficiency.
Idle start stop function automatically stops the engine when the vehicle is idle and silently starts it when the optimal conditions are met. This in turn helps in increasing fuel efficiency.
Brake energy regeneration makes use of Smart hybrid technology to charge the batteries whenever the vehicle decelerates. This in turn assists the engine’s idle start/stop and torque assists functions.
