Third generation Hyundai i20 launched

Hyundai has launched the new third generation i20 hatchback in the Indian market. The new generation has been launched at Rs 6 lakhs for the base variant to Rs 11 lakhs for the top end (ex showroom prices).

The new generation i20 measures in at 3995mm in length, 1775mm in width and 1505mm in height. The car also uses a wheelbase of 2580mm and is built on a new platform. It rides on new 195/55 R15 tyres with 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels and offers litres of luggage space.

Talking about the design, the new i20 employs a sharper design language that Hyundai calls Sensuous Sportiness. The new i20 gets sharper upswept LED headlights with a large grille and a sporty bumper with a splitter at the bottom. The side reveals how large the car has got, the glasshouse and wheelbase has got longer, there’s a rising waistline that rises from the front and moves all the way to the back along with a chrome window line that neatly rises into the d-pillar.

The rear has a neat blacked out element tucked below the glasshouse and z-shaped LED taillights which are connected by a chrome strip. Completing the look is a large diffuser in the bumper.

The cabin follows a modern and very business kind of look with driver centric layout for ease of use while driving. The touchscreen infotainment system is a 10.25 inch unit and so is the instrument console which is now a full digital screen. A new four spoke steering wheel takes centre stage and comes with several controls placed on it as well. Also interesting in the dashboard are slim horizontal lines which essentially is the continuation of the air con vents that run the length of the dashboard although it’s just a four vent unit.

In terms of features, the new i20 gets LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, projector fog lamps, electric sunroof, LED taillights, wireless charging, push button start/stop, automatic climate control, shark fin antenna, ambient lighting and a 7–speaker BOSE sound system.

The 10.25 inch touchscreen infotainment system now comes with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Blu Link telematics is also part of the package in the new i20. On the safety front it gets intelligent speed limit information display, Navigation based cruise control among many more.

Buyers will be delighted to be able to choose from 10 different colour options which include 4 new paint schemes – Intense blue, Aurora grey, Aqua Turquoise and Brass, while Slate blue, Tomato red, Dragon red, Sleek silver, Polar white, Phantom black are carried over from the earlier range. Customers can also get a Phantom black roof as part of optional paint scheme.

Powering the hatchback internationally are range of engine which include –

  1. 1.0 litre T-GDI petrol, coupled to a 48v mild hybrid motor with 100PS and 172Nm of torque with 6-speed manual/ 7-speed DCT.

  2. 1.0 litre T-DGI coupled to a 48v mild hybrid with 120ps and 200Nm of torque WITH 6-speed manual/ 7-speed DCT.

  3. 1.2 litre MPI petrol with 84PS and 118Nm of torque with 5-speed manual transmission.

  4. 1.0 litre T-GDI making 100ps and 172Nm of torque with 6-speed manual/ 7-speed DCT.

Talking about safety, Hyundai has packed the car with loads ranging from 6 airbags, hill assist control, vehicle stability management, tyre pressure monitoring system, emergency stop signal, driver rear view monitor, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, driver and passenger pre-tensioned with load limiter and ISOFIX child safety seat mounts.

Hyundai is also offering total peace of mind with 3 years/ 1 00 000 kms, 4 Years/ 50 000 kms and 5 Years/ 40 000 kms. Further customers will also get 3 years BluLink Subscription + 3 Years Road Side Assistance

The Hyundai i20 will take on the Honda Jazz facelift, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza and Tata Altroz and is expected to put up quite a fight.
