Volkswagen has officially stopped production of the Ameo compact sedan in the Indian market. The Ameo was until now the most affordable sedan in its model range with a starting price of Rs 5.24 lakhs (ex showroom).
Designed grounds up as an India specific sedan, the Ameo didn’t quite take off like it should have, not that it was a bad car, it’s just that the design didn’t quite go well with Indian tastes quite well. It also was the fact that it didn’t quite have a lengthy feature list most rivals offered which meant that buyers easily looked elsewhere with the Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the Honda Amaze in the fray.
Volkswagen didn’t give up just there and the company over the years brought tired its level best by introducing several upgrades and changes to keep things fresh but sales just didn’t click like it should have. The low volumes however just didn’t prove grounds enough for the model to be reworked on to bring it to BS6 standards and up in line with other safety releated regulations and hence it had to be discontinued.
The future at Volkswagen has now shifted towards SUV’s and since is the trend nowadays. The German automaker has already launched the Tiguan Allspace and T-ROC in the Indian market with a price tag of Rs 33.12 lakhs ( ex showroom) and Rs 19.99 lakhs (ex showroom) respectively. Further down the automaker will also be bringing several more models with the Taigun expected to hit the shores sometime next year.
